Surgery in A Tent To A Modern Hospital: A 125 Year Journey

Over the years, I have met many heroes of the faith. Dr. Neville Everard was one of them. I remember him both as an accomplished surgeon and a gentleman. He spoke at meetings in the Christian Medical College where I was a student. He was reputed to be a man of prayer, often found on his knees. It is no wonder that the Kachhwa Christian Hospital (KCH) that began in a tent in 1897 soon became the premier hospital in the area. In time, the hospital joined EHA. Now they have plans to build a new multi-purpose hospital.

Kachhwa Christian Hospital โ€“ A Timeline

1897โ€“1929: Founding and Early Work. In 1897, Dr. Ashton, a British surgeon, converted an indigo factory into a tent dispensary where he performed surgery!  This humble beginning was the foundation for medical services in the region.

1929โ€“1970s: Expansion and Growth. In 1929, Dr. Neville Everard steered it to become one of the top surgical centers in the region, with 150 beds and a Nursing School.

1970sโ€“2001: Integration into EHA. As Western missions ended their operations in India, the hospital joined EHA. Dedicated Indian professionals sustained the services.

2002โ€“2010: Crisis and Revival. Coming on hard times, the hospital nearly closed down. Dr. Raju Abraham stepped in. It was downsized to 20 beds, with a change in focus. It became poor friendly and majored on Community outreach, sanitation initiatives, village development and training programs.

2022โ€“Present: Celebrating 125 years of service. In 2023, KCH was revived. While retaining its focus on the poor, it is a modern hospital with most essential services. It seeks to expand Head & Neck Oncology Services, improve its infrastructure, and foster servant leadership.

Stories from the Frontlines

Hope Restored: From Despair to Healing

Anand (not his actual name), a 75-year-old man battling advanced oral cancer, his condition seemingly beyond hope, was placed on end of life care.ย  In January 2025, he began low-dose chemotherapy. What followed was nothing short of a miracleโ€”within four months, his tumor shrank by 95%. He was able to eat again. His dignity was restored. His journey is a moving reminder that healing is not just medicalโ€”it is spiritual, emotional. It is rooted in faith, perseverance and the power of hope.

From Darkness to Light

Sanjay, a 36-year-old sari weaver, struggled with leprosy and alcoholism. His health declined and heย  became isolated. A KCH volunteer found him and he was admitted with severe anemia. With medical care and good food, his condition improved. Now sober and reunited with his family, Sanjay is rebuilding his life and plans to return to weaving. His story reflects the power of timely care and compassion.
